Meta Media Workshops for Teachers and Students

Dr. Super's Math Manipulatives Project

George Mason University

Meta Media Mathematics Program

A Meta Media workshop serves two purposes. First, it is an example of a new way the INTERNET can be used by teachers for their own professional development in mathematics. Second, it is an example of a way to use the INTERNET as the means of presenting hands-on mathematics activities to students in the classroom. For either purpose, you do this Meta Media workshop by reading an electronic book, using a concept we call NAVIGATION -- i.e., the action of going easily from place-to-place in this electronic presentation with features we refer to as buttons and the talking Genie.

Before you take (do) this Meta Media workshop, you may want to see a brief description of the nature of our work with Meta Media workshops and how this first version will differ from future planned iterations. Do so by clicking here. To actually do the Meta Media workshop exploration and not just read about it, teachers or students will only need the following materials. Teachers and students who do this Meta Media workshop exploration will study concepts and skills in pre-algebra, algebra and geometry while they engage in algebraic and geometric thinking. They will be experiencing directly ideas supporting the four core goals established by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (1989).
